Anon#8211;farmexperimentwasconductedatBinhYenHamlet,LongHoaVillage,CanthoProvinceintheSouthofVietnam.Atotalof60TamHoang(TH)and60TauVang(TV)layerswereequallydividedbetween6smallfarms(10THand10TVoneach)andwerefollowedfor20weeksofthelayingperiod.Thehenswereallocatedatrandomto2treatmentsina2*2factorialexperiment.Thefirstfactorwasbreed(TamHoangandTauVang),andthesecondfactordiet,including:Mixeddietincludingmaizemeal,fishmealandroastedsoyabeanmealandwithasupplementofoystermealandbonemeal;Separatediet,includingthesamefeedstuffsbutsuppliedseparatelyin3feeders,andwithoysterandbonemealmixedtogetherwiththemaizemeal.Therewerethus4treatmentswith6replications(farms)andwith5birdsperexperimentalunit(pen)andintotal20hensperfarm.Dailydrymatter(DM),crudeprotein(CP)andmetabolisableenergy(ME)intakeswere21%higherfortheimprovedTamHoanghenscomparedwiththelocalTauVanghens.Thehen#8211;dayproductionandmeaneggweightweresignificantlydifferentbetweenbreeds(P0.001)andfortheTamHoangwere30.1%and43.5grespectively,comparedwith23.9%and39.2g,respectively,fortheTauVang.However,therewerenosignificantdifferencesbetweentreatments,andforthemixedandseparatedietshen-dayproductionandeggweightswere27.2%and41.4gcomparedwith26.8%and41.4g,respectively.Thefeedconsumptionperkgeggswasnotsignificantlydifferentforbothtreatmentsandbreeds.Inaddition,CPandME/kgeggswerenotsignificantlydifferentbetweenbreeds,butwerebetweentreatments.CPandMEintakeswere602and633g/kgeggsand50.8and52.6MJ/kgeggsfortheTamHoangandTauVanghens,respectively(P0.05).Forthemixedandseparatediets,CPandMEintakeswere681and553gand49.8and53.6MJ/kgeggs,respectively(P0.05).Thehensfrommixedandseparatedietcangetaround41%and44%ftheCP,42%and35%oftheMEintakes(respectively)fromthescavengingfeedresource.
