Milk production and pregnancy rate of dual purpose cows in Southeast Mexico

Effectsofsomefactorsonmilkproductionandpregnancyrateat120dayspostpartumindual-purposecowsineightfarmswereevaluated.Infourfarms,cowsweremanagedondirectgrazingwithbalancedfoodandmachinemilking(CM)andinfourongrazingandmanualmilking(SC).Thecowswere0.5and0.75ofEuropeangenes.Totalsalablemilkproduction(PLA)wascorrectedat120dayspostpartum.Thestatisticalmodelincludedtheeffectsofmanagementtype,geneticgroup(GG),bodyconditionatcalving(CCP),seasonofcalving(EP)andfirst-orderinteractions.Thedailyproductionofsalablemilk(PLD)andthecumulativesalable(PLA)at120dayspostpartumwereanalyzedbyusinggenerallinearfixedmodelandgestationrateabinarylogisticmodelwasused.PLDandPLAwereaffectedbythemanagementandseasonofcalving(P0.01).ThemeanPLDandPLAwerehigherinMCthaninSCfarms,with2and240kg,respectively.PLDandPLAwerehigherwhencowscalvedduringtherainyseason.Pregnancyratewasnotaffectedbythefactorsincludedinthemodel(P0.2).Inconclusion,supplementationandmechanicalmilkingincreasesmilkproductionaswellaswhencowscalvedduringthedryseason.However,neithersupplementationnorseasonofcalvinghadaninfluencetoincreasethelowergestationrateat120postpartumdays.
