Levels of lead and copper in plasma of dairy cows, pastures, soil and water from selected areas of Morogoro suburbs, Tanzania

Knowledgeoftraceandtoxicmetalconcentrationsinlivestock,feeds,waterandsoilisimportantforassessingtheeffectsofpollutantsondomesticanimalsandcontaminantintakesbyhuman.AstudywasconductedinMorogoromunicipalitytodeterminethelevelsofleadandcopperinplasmaofdairycattle,inpastures,soilsandwaterfromtwoareas,KingorwilaandMzingasuspectedtobepollutedwiththesemetals.Fortyeightbloodsamplesfromcows,ninepastures,threesoilandthreewatersampleswereused.Drymatterofsoilsandpastureswasdeterminedbydryinginhotairoventoconstantweightat60oC.Leadandcopperassayweredoneusingthestandardproceduresandreadbytheatomicabsorptionspectrophotometer.PCV,Hb,andbloodcellcountsweredonebystandardproceduresinvolvingtheuseofhematocrittubes,Sahlihaemometerandhaemocytometersetsrespectively.nbsp;Kingolwiracowshadsignificantly(P0.05)higherplasmaleadlevelsandsignificantlylower(P0.05)valuesofRBCcountscomparedtoMzingacows.Plasmalevelsofleadandcopperinthecowsfrombothlocations(0.27and0.98mg/lrespectivelyforMzingaand0.45and0.93mg/lrespectivelyforKingorwila)werewithintheacceptablelimits.Pasture,soilandwaterlevelsofleadandcopperrangedbetween3.5-3.6mg/kg,11-31mg/kgand0.0-0.01kg/lrespectively;andallwerewithintheacceptablelevels.nbsp;Itisherebyconcludedthatlevelsofleadandcopperinpastures,soilsandwaterinMzingaandKingorwilaareasinMorogorodoesnotposeathreattoanimalsandman.
