Reproductive performance of traditionally managed sheep in the south western part of Ethiopia

ThestudywasconductedtoassessthereproductiveperformanceofewesundervillagemanagementconditioninsouthwesternpartofEthiopia.Thestudywasamonitoringstudywhichtookplaceforthreeyears(1995-1997).nbsp;Theoverallleastsquaresmeansforlambinginterval(LI)andannualreproductiverate(ARR)were262±53.4daysand1.88±0.44,respectively.Theoverallleastsquaresmeansofageatfirstlambingandlittersizewere404+65.40dayand1.21+1.45lambs,respectively.Lambingintervalwassignificantly(P0.05)influencedbyparityoftheewe,typeofbirthandyearoflambing.Theewesattheirfirst,andsixandaboveparityshowedlongersubsequentlambingintervalthanewesat2-5parity.Ewesthatsuckledsingleshadshortersubsequentlambingintervalthaneweswhichsuckledtwins(255+3.74vs283+5.72days).Yearoflambingandtypeofbirthexertedasignificanteffect(P0.05)onARR.TheewesthatdroppedtwinshadhigherARRthaneweswhichdroppedsingles(1.52Vs2.56lambs/ewe/year).Littersizewassignificantly(p0.05)influencedbyseasonoflambingandparityoftheewe.Therewasatendencythat,littersizeincreasedwithanincreaseofparityuptofifthparityanddroppedatthesixthandmoreparities.Thereproductiveperformanceofewesundervillagemanagementconditionisdiscussedinassociationwithreportselsewhereinthetropics.
