Sub-SaharanAfricangoatswithanestimatedpopulationof180millionsaremajorassetforfarmercommunitiesinarangeofagro-ecologicalzones.Thisstudywasundertakentodeterminethegeneticdiversityinanddifferentiationofrelationshipsamong18populationsofgoatsfromUganda(4),Tanzania(5),Kenya(2),Mozambique(2),Nigeria(3),Mali(1)andGuineaBissau(1).Heterozygosity,estimatesofFST,geneticdiversityanddistanceswereperformedusingdatafrom11microsatelliteDNAloci.nbsp;Expectedheterozygosityrangedfrom0.450inGuineaBissaupopulationto0.541inMbeyapopulation(Tanzania),whiletheobservedheterozygosityrangedfrom0.441inPafuripopulation(Mozambique)to0.560inSebeipopulation(Uganda).Meannumberofalleles(MNA)perpopulationrangedfrom3.82to5.91.Genedifferentiation(FST)amongpopulationswaslow(5.3%),aresultconfirmedbygeneticdistances(DA).nbsp;Ourresultsrevealthatgeneticrelationshipsbetweenpopulationsreflecttheirgeographicalproximityratherthanmorphologicalclassification.
