ThepotentialofrestrictedsucklingaccessandprogesteroneinjectionpostpartumasaremedytoextendedparturitionintervalsintraditionallymanagedWestAfricandwarf(WAD)goatswasinvestigatedinthisstudy.At21dayspostpartum36confinedWADdoeswithsynchronisedbreedingwereassignedequallytooneof3treatments:i)sucklingaccessrestrictedtobetween0900hand1700h;ii)sucklingaccessrestrictedtobetween1700hand0900hthefollowingdayand;iii)unrestrictedsucklingaccess.At28dayspostpartumeachtreatmentgroupwasfurtherdividedintotwoandonegroupwasgiven100mgiminjectionofprogesterone.Another14doesonthefreerangemanagementsystemwithunrestrictedsucklingaccessperiodwerealsodividedintotwoandagroupwasalsogiven100mgiminjectionofprogesterone.Kiddinginterval(KI)waslongerinthegroupwithunrestrictedsucklingaccess,butinthegroupsthatreceivedprogesteroneinjectionKIwassignificantly(P0.05)reducedby27and45daysintheconfinedandfreerangegoats,respectively.Reducingsucklingaccessperiodto0900h-1700happearedtoreduceKIwithoutanegativeeffectontheperformancetraitsofthesucklingkids.ThesetwoapproachescouldbeusefultoreducethebreedingintervalintraditionallymanagedWADgoats.
