Status of mastitis in lactating goats at Sokoine University of agriculture and neighbouring smallholder farms in Morogoro Municipality, Tanzania

AstudywasconductedatSokoineUniversityofAgriculture(SUA)teachingandresearchfarmtoassessthestatusofmastitisingoatsusingtheCaliforniamastitistest(CMT)andbacteriologicalexaminationofmilksamples.AfewsmallholderfarmsaroundSUAwerealsoinvolvedinthestudy.Atotalof43lactatingdoescomprising26doesfromSUAand17doesfromsmallholderfarmerswerescreenedforevidenceofmastitis.ThescreenedanimalscomprisedofcrossesofSaanenandNorwegianLandracedairygoatswiththeindigenousSmallEastAfricangoats.Theresultsshowedthat,overall,76.7%goatshadsubclinicalmastitisasreflectedbytheCMTpositivityofthescreenedhalves.NinetytwopercentoftheCMTpositiveanimalswerefromSUAfarmandtherewasasignificantdifferenceinCMTpositivitybetweengoatsatSUAfarmandthoseofsmallholderfarms.Also,significantdifference(p0.05)wasobservedonCMTpositivitybetweenbreedswithcrossbredanimalsbeingmoreCMTpositivethantheindigenousgoats.OnlyoneSaanendoefromasmallholderfarmhadclinicalmastitis.Ofthe85milksamplesfromhalvesof43does,five(5.90%)werepositiveonbacteriologicalexaminationandtheisolateswereStaphylococcusepidermidis(4)andunidentifiedcoagulasenegativestaphylococcus(1).Itwasconcludedthatsubclinicalmastitiswaspresentinthestudyfarmsbutclinicalmastitiswasrare.
