Influence of calf presence loose in a pen alongside the milking parlor on yield and fat content of milk from Brahman x Holstein cows

Anexperimentwascarriedouttoevaluatetheinfluenceofthreecowmanagementstrategiesatmilkingonmilkyieldandcompositionandonliveweight(LW)gainofthecalves.TwentyfourBrahmanxHolsteincowswereusedforthefollowingtreatments:nbsp;(W)withoutcalfstimulationatmilking;(T)calftiedbesideitsmotherduringmilkingand(L)calflooseinapenalongthemilkingparlor.Thecowsweremachinemilkedtwicedaily,at06:30and15:30handsucklingwasallowedfor30minutesaftermorningmilkinguntilweaningat119days.OntreatmentsW,TandL,averagesaleablemilkyieldsuntilweaningwere5.6;8.0and7.7kg/day(P=0.013)inthemorningand1.9;4.2and3.2kg/day(P=0.001)intheafternoon,consumedmilkwas2.8.1.8and2.3kg/day(P=0.204)andcalfnbsp;LWgainswere0.62,0.40and0.41kg/day(P=0.005).Itwasshownthatcalfpresenceduringmilkingelevatestotalandsaleablemilkyieldandreducescalfliveweightgain.Resultsobtainedtyingthecalvesclosetotheirdamsormaintainingthemlooseinapenalongsidethemilkingparloraresimilar,exceptalowermilkfatandyieldofsomeLcowsattheafternoonmilking.Untiedcalvesallowsgrouphandlingandappreciablyfacilitatesmanagementduringmilkingindualpurposeherds.
