Comparison of Abbott MS-2 and API 20E Overnight System in Identification of Enterobacteriaceae

The Abbott MS-2 was compared to the API 20E overnight system for its ability to identify Enterobacteriaceae. Two hundred sixty-nine clinical isolates, 19 laboratory stock cultures, and 11 American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) stock cultures were examined by both systems. There was 83.7% agreement for clinical specimens, 84.2% for hospital stock cultures, and 81.8% for ATCC strains. Some discrepancies between the MS-2 and API identifications may be due to differences in data banks and biochemical tests used. The major advantage of the MS-2 is its speed.
