Farm Households and Wage Labour in the Northeastern Maritimes in the Early 19th Century

This paper underlines the significance of farm dwellers to the wage labour force during the first half of the 19th century. It begins with a consideration of the influences which led farm dwellers in the northeast Maritimes to seek wage work. It then examines the types of work that they became involved with, emphasizing the variety in their work experiences, both in local and in distant settings. It concludes with a consideration of some of the consequences that followed from the involvement of farm dwellers in wage labour. Résumés Cette recherche souligne l'importance, pendant la première moitié du 19e siècle, des habitants de la ferme pour la main-d'oeuvre salariée. Il faut d'abord considérer ce qui a incité le paysannat du nord-est des provinces maritimes à chercher de l'emploi. L'étude examine ensuite les types d'activités exercées sur le marché du travail, en insistant sur la diversité des expériences tant au niveau local qu'en des lieux plus éloignés. Elle conclut en notant certaines conséquences de cette participation paysanne au sein de la main-d'?uvre salarié.
