Summary Pollination research in New Zealand is reviewed. The construction of portable field cages is described. These are made of panels of nylon insect screening supported on a “Dexion” framework. One type of cage measures 30 × 10 ft and is 6 ? ft high, being sufficiently large for bees from an enclosed nucleus to visit flowers inside normally and collect nectar and pollen. I t is used in pollination research for either saturating an area of a crop or pasture with bees or excluding them altogether; the effect upon bees of agricultural chemicals sprayed and dusted over enclosed crops can also be studied. The other type of cage is much smaller, measuring 5 × 2? ft, with a height of 2? ft. It is used to exclude bees from pastures and crops in pollination studies. These cages are easily transported and assembled, and, because of their sturdy construction, have proved satisfactory for use under our windy climatic conditions.
