摘要

Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship between folate level and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase(MTHFR)polymorphism of mothers and risk of low birth weight newborns. Methods The case-control design was conducted with 70 premature newborns as the observation group and another normal birth weight newborns as the control group. Their mothers’blood specimen was collected for analysis of folate level and MTHFR C677T polymorphism. Results Participants were stratified into three subgroups, according to the MTHFR C677T polymorphism(wild-type, n=29; heterozygous, n=68; homozygous, n=43). The folate level was(23.22±0.23)ng/mL in the observation group and was(17.23±0.17)ng/mL in the control group, with a significant difference(P0.05). Conclusion the folate supplementation should be considered on a individual basis. Too much or too less folate supplementation may raise the risk of low birth weight in newborns.
