Abstract:Objective To investigate the application value of modified sputum suction method for patients with tracheotomy. Methods A total of 24 patients with tracheotomy were randomly divided into the control group and the study group, with 12 cases in each group. Patients in the control group received traditional deep suction method in sputum suction while the modified sputum suction method was carried out to patients in the study group. The changes in oxygen saturation, heart rate, breathing rate were observed, and the incidence of airway mucosal injury and irritating cough were compared between two groups. Results Patients in the study group received better improvement in heart rate and breathing rate compared with those in the control group after intervention. The incidence of airway mucosal injury and irritating cough was lower in the study group than that of controls, but with no significant difference(P0.05). Conclusion The modified suction method is an effective and safe way for patients with tracheotomy. It may reduce the risk of airway mucosal injury and irritating cough.
