New Zealand fungi 37: two new species of the sooty mould genus Metacapnodium with dictyoseptate ascospores

Two new species of Metacapnodium are illustrated and described from the bark of living, endemic trees in New Zealand. Both species have dictyoseptate ascospores and microconidial capnophialophora anamorphs. Metacapnodium adamantinum has ascospores measuring mostly 54–70×13.5–21 μm, transversely 8–13-septate with the central 2–5 cells having longitudinal septa. This was collected on Leptospermum scoparium (manuka) and Nothofagus fusca (red beech/tawhai). Metacapnodium gemmiferum has ascospores measuring 25–35×11–14.5 μm, mostly 5–6 transversely septate with the central 2–3 cells having longitudinal septa. This was collected on Nothofagus solandri var. cliffortioides (mountain beech/tawhai rauriki).
