Summary Incubation of sulphur-deficient soils, after liming those of low pH, showed that lime increased both mineral nitrogen and sulphate sulphur formed over a given period, compared with unlimed soil. The total N : S ratio in neutral soils was 7 or 8 : 1, while mineral N and sulphate S accumulated in the ratio of about 10 : 1. In acid soils, these ratios were considerably higher. It is suggested that mineralisation and immobilisation of sulphur in the soil may follow a similar pattern to that of nitrogen.
