Biochemical and physiological basis of resistance to spot blotch in emmer wheat

Emmer wheat (Triticum dicoccum (Schrank.) Schulb.) is known for its high protein and dietary fiber contents but?is non-free threshable and highly susceptible to spot blotch caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana (Sacc.) Shoemaker. We have crossed potential emmer wheat lines and subjected to mutagenesis to isolate free threshable and leaf blight resistant lines.?Fifty-five free threshable mutant emmer wheat lines thus derived were evaluated for spot blotch resistance in the present?study. Four free threshable mutant lines viz., NP-200 x DDK 1009-1, NP-200 x DDK-1009-9, NP-200 x MACS-2912-1 and?DDK-1013x DDK-1001-3 were found highly resistant to spot blotch disease. Compared to susceptible genotypes, resistant?genotypes recorded higher amount of total phenol, total protein, and reducing sugars but lesser number of stomata.
