The historical overview of events and facts related to the formation of oil and gas business in Bashkortostan is given in the article beginning with the first written documentary evidence of the presence of oil sources between the Volga and the Urals. The historical way of search and discovery of the first oil fields of commercial significance in Bashkortostan is observed. The significance of discovery and development of oil resources of Bashkortostan for economic, social and cultural development of the republic is determined, their role in building up fuel and energy potential of the country is shown.
