The material culture monuments supported by a proper spatial management policy could and should positively influence activation processes in some areas. Stress should be put especially on those presenting individual values proving their uniqueness. Recently Cistercian material culture monuments have been focused on. The abbeys of the Ma?opolska region: J?drzejów, Sulejów, W?chock and Koprzywnica, are both the oldest and most involved in preserving the Cistercian art tradition. The monastery complexes alongside with their vicinity make the most of recreation and their ages-old monuments are leading tourist attractions. Naturally the building complexes still fulfill the religious functions. The unique values of the monuments and the fact of the existence of the slightly mysterious, hidden behind the monastery walls, world where monks still lead their different lifestyle, are visibly attractive to tourists. On the one hand visitors may pose some threat to the monuments but on the other hand they will for sure support financially the indispensable restoration of the Cistercian objects. Adequate preparation of the complexes for receiving tourist traffic calls for undertaking integrated activities focusing on both guaranteeing preservation of the monuments and providing necessary tourist infrastructure and promotion.
