Presently some changes of the previous image of a village are observed: falling employment in agriculture at the time of market economy and development of various kinds of services, as well as development of construction function in the suburban settlements. The transformations mentioned are not regular though. The most serious problem is observed in the places situated at a long distance from the city. These are the places where the limitation connected with the agricultural function is not parallel with development of new economic investments and the problem of protecting the landscape space is not observed either. Migration of the young is directly connected with a lack of prospects of employment. Thus ageing of local communities together with the process of degradation of the areas is observed. The international project “Hinterland potentials for a spatial development under the aspects of decline” attempted to define the above mentioned issues, as well as create a strategy of harmonised development of such areas taking into consideration both national and cultural conditions. The study describes the results of the social initiatives of inhabitants of selected villages. The initiatives concerning rural and recreational areas management were analysed in the project.
