For a long time, subjects dealing with the refri-gerant charge in equipment were not a priority. For practi-cal purposes a common estimation was to assess that 50%of the evaporator’s volume is filled with liquid. Thingsstarted to change after the Montreal’s protocol (1987)highlighted the destructive influence of some refrigerantson the ozone’s layer, and the Kyoto’s protocol (1997) un-derlined that most of refrigerants considerably contributeto the greenhouse effect. Refrigeration units cannot avoidrefrigerant leaks, and can thus have a harmful impact onthe environment. Therefore recently studies on refrigerantcharge reduction have become more numerous.
