INTEGRATING THE ENVIRONMENT IN URBAN DEVELOPMENT: GOOD PRACTICE IN SINGAPORE

Singapore is a highly industrialized and urbanized city-state of three million peoplelocated in Southeast Asia. The city-state is located on an island of 647 km2, nearlyhalf ofwhich is built-up; road infrastructure covers another 11% of the island'sland mass. Singapore's economy developed rapidly, growing from a GNP percapita of $1972 in 1971 to $22,541 in 1995. During the past 30 years, thepopulation has doubled, the urbanized area of the island has doubled, housingunits trebled, and industrial land grew six-fold (Tan, 1995).
