Designing In The Age Of Network Society: The Role Of Technology In Design Processes And Knowledge Generation

In recent decades the architect’s desire to enjoy a complete control overan architectural project has been overshadowed by various innovationsin engineering particularly the Internet (1). The forceful spatio-temporalfractions, or in David Harvey’s (1989) words, “time-space compression,”pose uncanny conditions in modern society – not to forget the work ofthe architect from a professional perspective. As a result, architects feelobligated to grasp the potential consequences as they constantly see thischallenging era as an opportunity to strengthen their turnover time inarchitectural production at the office as well as in their actual production ina capitalist world of increasing competitiveness. For the body of practicingarchitects it is an obligation to learn, adapt and reflect as much and as soonas possible to match the pressuring effects of market relations in tune withprofessional tendencies. As a result, the most feasible and measurable toolseems to be the click of a mouse to hook up on the Internet, leading to newways of interaction, and creating sets of relations with an unprecedentedspeed and mobility for the exchange of ideas as well as for the generationof knowledge for all partners at both ends.
