摘要

The focus of the presently reported study is on therelationshipbetween certain aspects of the physical structureof apartment houses and the distribution of friendship andacquaintance within the apartment. The style of living thattakes place within the small apartment house is rapidlybecoming a new norm for the Turkish middle class. Their rateof construction in Ankara alone is very hig'h and in thisrespect the capital city of Turkey is not unusual. The datafor this study was collected entirely from such apartmenthouses, in the hopes that the results would shed some light onthe behavioral consequences of the new type of environment. The importance of the concepts of home and neighbor in Turkishculture can be seen easily; the turks are not a mobile groupand homes are often lived in for generations. The language isreplete with sayings linking the concepts of home and neighborpositively together (e.g."Ev alma kom?u al"). It follows thatany change in living arrangements that affects hospitality andne?ghborliness becomes a relevant and interesting issue. Inaddition, there seems to be a world-wide increase in apartmenthouse dwellers,as a result of both economic and demographicforces and results of studies involving such units increase ingeneralizeability as a consequence. As the rate ofhomogenization of the built environment increases, the needfor scientific information on behavioral effects becomescritical.
