How Urban Designers Perform: An International Perspective On Actual Practice

Despite the serious development of the domain of design review inurbanism (1), which mainly concerns design outcomes, a systemic outlookthat would specifically focus on the fundamentals of design process andthe professional performance of designers has yet to be established inurban design theory. Therefore, as pointed out by Loew (2012, 1), thebasic question, “who are urban designers?” still remains valid, alongwith another question, namely: “Have different countries developedtheir individual approaches or is there an international ‘school’ ofurban design?” As he argues, a clear answer to these questions requirescomprehensive analyses of the current practice within the field (Loew,2012, 2).
