Cognatewords, such as gravity, gravitas andgrave emphasize the weightiness while ignoringits obstetrical meaning. Isaac Newtoncoined the verb “gravitate,” in thesense of moving toward something, todescribe his theory of gravity, while gravyis an Old English word that is ultimatelytraced to the Latin, granum [grains].
