A Novel Preclinical Course in Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Virtual Surgery

The Liason Committee on Medic alEducation provides guidelines for medicalschool curricula, but these guidelineslack requirements for teaching ophthalmology.1 Due to the vast amount ofinformation taught to preclinical medicalstudents, more time is devoted to fundamentalsubjects and less on specialties likeophthalmology.2 There has been a significantdecline in the number of schoolsrequiring an official clinical rotation inophthalmology.3 In addition, althoughthe number of hours of undergraduateophthalmology instruction may meet theInternational Council of OphthalmologyTask Force recommendations, data indicatesthat residents in primary care areuncomfortable in assessing and managingcommon ophthalmic conditions.4 Thesestudies highlight the need for improvedophthalmic instruction in medical schoolto avoid overlooking eye conditions thatmay result in irreversible damage if leftuntreated.
