A New Connecting Technology of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic Plates

CFRP has excellent mechanical properties. There are two principal connecting methods, including (i) chemical connection by using adhesive and (ii) mechanical connection by rivets and bolts. Although CFRP has been used for various engineering applications, e.g., aerospace and automotive industries, there are several technical problems, e.g., poor connectivity. It has been required to examine the fundamental aspect of connectability of the CFRP plates. In the present work, a connecting method using the CFRP rivet was newly proposed. It appeared that the proposed CFRP rivet has the excellent connectivity. Using new CFRP rivet, the failure characteristics can be examined during the loading process until the final failure (like sensor). In this case, current value through the CFRP rivet was monitor, in which electric power applied to the CFRP plates. With both connection methods with adhesive and CFRP rivet, the high connecting strength was obtained, which is more than 10 times high compared to that for the conventional adhesive connection.
