Successful systemic thrombolysis with rtPA in a patient with history of a life-threatening rtPA-associated orolingual angioedema
Systemic thrombolysis with the recombinant tissue plasminogenactivator (rtPA) is an effective therapy option in the treatment of acuteischaemic stroke [1]. A rare but potentially fatal side effect is the development of an orolingual angioedema [2]. Because of improvementsin acute stroke therapy and an aging population the incidence of recurrent strokes is increasing and results in more patients who mightreceive repeated treatments with rtPA. However, to date it is unknownwhether an orolingual angioedema in the past is a contraindication forthe future application of rtPA.
