OVERVIEW On January 21, 2007, an international panel of experts in gastrointestinal oncology met in Orlando, Florida to discuss the current status of chemotherapy for the treatment of advanced gastric cancer and to address the issues and controversies surrounding the management of this profound global health problem. The meeting was chaired by Yuh Sakata of Japan, and participants included Jaffer A. Ajani from the United States, Masashi Fujii and Ichinosuke Hyodo from Japan, and Yeul-Hong Kim from Korea. This article summarizes the data, ideas, and opinions exchanged at the roundtable discussion, as well as the conclusions and expectations of the panel members regarding the use of chemotherapy in both preoperative and postoperative settings and the emerging role of novel biologic agents.
