Dr. Frances Arnold, Linus Pauling professor of Chemical Engineering,Bioengineering and Biochemistry at the California Institute ofTechnology (Caltech), has been recently awarded with the Nobel Prizein Chemistry 2018. This is certainly good news for biotechnology andmost certainly for Electronic Journal of Biotechnology.Dr. Arnold pioneered the work in directed evolution of enzymeshaving an unprecedented impact in biocatalysis by allowing theredesign of the catalysts of life to match process requirements interms of specificity, activity and robustness. This has opened newfields for enzyme technology that would have been hardly perceivedsome decades ago.
