Medical Council warns doctorsto reduce over-prescribing ofbenzodiazepines

The Medical Council has issued advice to all doctors prescribingbenzodiazepines, z-drugs and Pregabalin to follow best practiceguidelines and to only prescribe benzodiazepines or similardrugs when absolutely required.The Medical Council has a dual role of protecting patientsand supporting doctors, and says it takes a very serious view ofover-prescribing of benzodiazepines, z-drugs and Pregabalin andis actively working with the HSE, the Department of Health, thePharmaceutical Society of Ireland and the medical profession totake action on this issue. A recent statement from the MedicalCouncil asserted that if necessary, in order to protect thepublic, the Medical Council will take disciplinary action againstmedical practitioners in relation to the over-prescribing ofbenzodiazepines, z-drugs and Pregabalin.
