In hyperuricaemia,the concentration ofuric acid in the serumreaches the saturationpoint and needle-likecrystals of monosodium urateform. A reduction in serum pHand temperature facilitatesfurther uric acid precipitation.The crystals form, initially,in the small joints of thefeet and hands; long-termhyperuricaemia can causethese crystals to deposit in thesurrounding soft tissue.
