Continuing the work of the late Dr Mahmoud Fikri, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean

It was with terrible shock and profoundsadness for all to learn that Dr MahmoudFikri, WHO Regional Director for theEastern Mediterranean, tragically diedof a heart attack on 17 October 2017,as he was en route to Uruguay to attendthe WHO Global Conference onNoncommunicable Diseases (1). DrFikri had been appointed as RegionalDirector in January 2017 by WHO’sExecutive Board following his nominationby the Regional Committee forthe Eastern Mediterranean in October2016. He had taken office on 1 February,2017 (2).
