Prevalence of vaginal infection in non-pregnant women in Karbala province

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the type of bacterial infection in women with vaginitis and antimicrobial susceptibility of vaginal bacterial infections isolates in educational Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Karbala city.Methods: About 40 high vaginal swab samples were collected from females who diagnosed clinically and had assigns symptoms of vaginitis, wait mount smear, swabs culture, and antibiotic susceptibility test were to all culture growth samples.Results: Vaginal infection is recognized as a major public health problem that causes a variety of problems for women at all the ages. Out of 40 sample of high vaginal swab collected, 82.5% of the women were infected with the following organisms, respectively, Staphylococcus aureus (33.3%), Escherichia coli (30.4%), Streptococcus (27.2%), and Monilia (9.1%), while 17.5% women had no growth.Antibiotic susceptibility test shows that staphylococci were sensitive to the Ceftazidime and Azithromycin while E. coli is sensitive to the gentamycin and ampicillin, finally, streptococci were sensitive to the imipenem and oxacillin antibiotic.Conclusion: S. aureus was the higher percentage in women with vaginitis and Monilia was the lowers, Ceftazidime, azithromycin, gentamycin, and ampicillin, imipenem, and oxacillin the more useful antibiotics for treatment.
