Relay technology promises appreciable network throughput and coverage enhancement which is requiredfor high speed wireless cellular systems to function to their optimum. This paper is focused on analysingthe link performance of a relay-based WiMAX network under varying conditions. Comparison is madebetween relay and direct link communication in terms of BER (Bit Error Rate), spectral efficiency andcapacity. Effect of multipath fading and user speed on performance are investigated as well. The entirestudy involves a hypothetical view as well as MATLAB simulations to predict the benefit of relaydeployment. This is aimed at solving pertinent issues such as coverage holes and cell edge problems whichare associated with traditional non-relay based cellular networks.
