Fly Ash (F-Class): Oppertiunities For Sustainable Development Of Low Cost Rural Roads

Fly ash, a waste derived from coalburning in thermal power plants is plentiful inIndia causing severe health, environment anddumping problems. It is estimated that about 150million tons of fly ash are being produced fromvarious thermal power plants in India. Utilizationof fly ash in bulk quantities, ways and means isbeing explored all over the world to use it for theconstruction of embankments and roads. This waythe fly ash concrete are made a 'greener' buildingmaterial and the discarded natural wastes can bere-utilized, avoiding otherwise wasteful landfilland harmful open incineration. To make valueadded concrete for development of sustainableinfrastructure there is a great need to study thetechnical details concerned with variousindustrial wastes in concrete and to reduceenvironmental hazards. It is also needed to reducethe cost of concrete for rural development inIndia. So our study is concerned with eco-efficientutilization of Fly Ash (F-class) as partialreplacement of cement in concrete. The aim of thepresent study is to investigate the low cost ruralroads made of fly ash (F-class). The fly ash (Fclass)was replaced within the range of 10-40% byweight of cement. In the present study, 5 differentmixes of fly ash concretes are tested forparameters like: compressive strength, flexuralstrength, modulus of elasticity and cost.
