Wireless Sensor Networks play a vital role in defence and civilian applications encompassing numerous applications such as battlefield surveillance, forest fire detection, structural health monitoring and so on. The lifetime of Wireless Sensor Netwroks is a key characteristic which defines the time period over which the WSN delivers its intended functionality as defined by applications. WSN have limited energy resources and are deployed in unattended and unreachable terrains where it is often not feasible to replenish the battery power. Therefore, the main focus is on the energy minimization which enhances the lifetime of Wireless Sensor Network. Thus, to minimize the energy consumption resulting in maximizing the lifetime of WSN, here an efficient self-healing routing protocol using Ant Colony Optimization metaheuristics that computes the shortest path between sources and sink by considering the hop count and residual energy is proposed. The proposed routing protocol is simulated using NS-2 with NRL extensions for Wireless Sensor Networks and compared with existing Adhoc On Demand Routing Protocol.
