An Economic Evaluation of Health Technology Assessment in India

Over the past decades, the rising cost of health care hasincreased the importance of HTA to support decisions about theutilization of resources. Questions have been raised as to whether theallocation of resources has led to an optimal gain in total health atpopulation level. It is a cause of serious concern since the HealthBudget in India is very meager in comparison to International Budgetallocation, these results in out of pocket situation to many patientswhich are uninsured and falling below the poverty line. Developmentof Health technology Assessment can solve this problem by utilizingthe direct investments to be pooled into the healthcare budget, whichcan result in the maximum utilization of resources to the patients.This is the time of need to develop effective HTA system from theGovt. of India, which can only resolve the catastrophic out of pocketsituations. In this study, we would be highlighting the currentposition of HTA in India, the critical need felt by Indian for theeffective. The goal of HTA is to provide objective, valid and reliableinformation to implement the results of research in daily practice andto provide input for decision-making concerning health policies.
