β- sitosterol and stigmasterol have been isolated and identified from stem, leaves, roots and unorganized cultures of Indigofera cordifolia and I .linnaei raisedand maintained by frequent subculturings on Murashige and Skoog's medium (1962) supplemented with 2,4-D and Kinetin (9.06+4.65) in I .cordifolia and with 2,4-D and Kinetin (11.32+2.32) in I. linnaei. In the present investigation, maximum content of sterols was observed in leaves of I. cordifolia and minimum in roots of I. linnaei. Among the plant parts the leaves contained highest percentage of sterols as compared to stems and roots in both the species. The content of isolated sterols in various plant parts was observed in this order; Leaves > Stems > Roots. In callus culture the maximum sterols content was found in 6 weeks old callus culture as the maximum growth indices was observed there. There was a progressive increase in sterols content from 2 to 6 weeks old callus culture while decrease with 8 weeks old callus culture in both plants.
