Synergistic effect of Mimusops elengi and Moringa oleifera on high fat diet induced atheroma in rats

Heart disease is rising an epidemic scale in Indian men and women vegetarians and nor-vegetarians whether they are living in India or abroad The world Health Organization report emphasizes that the cardio vascular diseases to be the largest cause of death and disability in India by 2020(WHO, 2002). Review of Literature reveals that plants Mimusops elengi & Moringa oleifera having antihyperlipidimic activity hence an attempt will be made to study the combined effect of Mimusopselengi & Moringaoleifera in high fat diet induced aetheroma in rats(with half of the doses).Divied the rats into six groups each of eight animals Group A - Normal diet + Water Group B - High fat diet + Water Group C - High fat diet + T1 (Mimusopselengi)Group D - High fat diet + T2 (Moringa oleifra)Group E - Combined Drug (T1 + T2) + High fat diet Group F - Stand Drug (Atrovastain) + High fat diet. and we examined lipid profile ,antioxidants and histopathology of heart , In combined extract treated group there is a significant(p>0.001) decrease in the TC, LDL, TG and increase in the HDL level when compared with the HFD group in case of individual group less significant decrease in the TC, LDL, TG and increase in the HDL level. Antioxidant studies reported that combined extracts group showed significant(p>0.01) reduction of LPO and increases level of SOD and catalase. Histopathological report concluded that HFD group showed fatty infiltration and thickening of intimal layer of aorta along with my migration of macro phages and mononuclear cells but combined extract treated group did not show any fatty infiltration and thickness of intimal layer it is nearly equal the normal aorta incase of individual groups Mimusops shows better effect than Moringa extract. We concluded that combined extract is having significant effect i.e. synergistic effect
