Indigenous Australians’ information behaviour and Internet use in everyday life: an exploratory study

This paper presents the findings of first stage an ongoing research project undertaken with a rural indigenous community in south australia. is focused on people’s information behaviour and their use internet everyday life. twenty-one ngarrindjeri volunteers, 10 males 11 females, participated field study. permission was granted extensive consultations elders were conducted before study commenced. questionnaires interview transcriptions analysed using open coding method. analysis enabled reflection perspectives insights. needs related to daily lives, including gathering weather, jobs, entertainment, culture, education, health services. (37.6%) most frequently used source information. here participants obtained from multiple sources, such as social media, specialised websites search engines. however, non-internet resources accounted for 62.4% overall sources these included local families relatives, elders, tv channels. reliability accessibility key understanding seeking behaviour. terms perceptions internet, they showed complicated feelings. cautious about influence internet; distressed by lack computer literacy, costs maintaining network, inadequate facilities area. despite this, attitudes towards still positive: recognised value technologies would like distribute culture online, caution appropriate manner. results provide insights into australians’ lives. future directions are also discussed.
