ThereisabignumberofchurchbellsfromtheColonialPeriodinthehighlandsofNorthernChile,whicharedamagedbyuseduringcenturiesandbyfallsduetoearthquakesthatperiodicallyaffecttheregion.Theaimofthisworkwastocreateanon#45;invasivemethodtorestorethesevaluablepieces,leavingminimumtraceofrepair.Afissuredchurchbellfromthelatenineteenthcenturywasrestored.Powdermetallurgywasusedtorepaironlyinthethinlineofthecrack,andtopreventcoarsematerialremovalactiononbothsidesofthecrack,withsubsequentfillingwithconventionalweldathightemperatures.Fissureswerefilledwithcopperandtinpowder,whichwerethenweldedwithtinatalowtemperature.Theadvantageofthismethodisthatitdoesnotcauselocalheatingthatcanbrittlethevicinityoftheweldedarea,resultinginasmoothjointandagoodadhesionsurfaceforgoodsoundtransmissionthatcanwithstandstresses.Results:Inordertoverifytheefficiencyofthemethod,jointmaterialstrengthwasmeasured,andthesoundwascomparedtothedominantnoterequiredbytheDIN4178Standard.Afiniteelementmodelincorporatingafillerringintherepairareawasaswellverified.Therationalefortheserepairworksliesinthattheoldbellsinquestionneedtobepreserved,sincetheyareculturallyvaluableartifactsthatholdrichmetallurgicalknowledgeandarepartofthenationalheritage./font
