Thereisabignumberofchurchbellsfrom16supth/supto19supth/supcenturiesinthehighlandsofNorthernChile,whicharedamagedbyuseduringcenturiesandbyfallsduetoearthquakesthataffecttheregion.Someofthemarecrackedorhavelostsomeoftheirparts.Theaimofthisworkwastouseanefficientweldingmethodtorepairthepieceslackingsomeoftheirparts,leavingaminimumtraceofrepairandextendingtheirusefullife.Restorationofabellwithsmeltingdefects,lackingsomeparts,isdescribed.Thefirstmethodemployedwasanalloysimilartothatofthepieceunderstudy,whicheliminatedtheissueofmaterialincompatibilitybetweenthefillerandthebell.Inordertodothis,X#45;rayfluorescencewasusedtoanalyzeapartoftherepairzone.Withdataobtainedfromanalysis,smeltedbarswereusedforweldingandplatesofequivalentgeometrywereusedtoreplacethemissingparts.Thesecondmethodusedwascommercialsilver#45;tinalloyweldingwithfluxcoating.Inbothcases,resultsindicatedagoodjoint,however,inthesecondcasecostishigherandthecolorresultsmakerestorationevident.Bothofthealloyrestorationsremainedinaphase,whichisductileandhasnoagingproblems.Ultrasonographyandpenetrantliquidsdetectednocracks.Asignificantnumberofvaluablecolonialbells,nowdamagedandoutofservice,restorationisjustified.Theymustbepreserved,sincetheyareavaluablepartofthenation'sculturalheritage./font
