GABAergic neurons excite hippocampal, but inhibit cortical, network activity in neonatal mice GABA exerts a depolarizing and sometimes excitatory action during development in excised tissue preparations. Recent stud- ies in mice suggest that GABA and GABAergic interneurons are inhibitory in isocortex and hippocampus in vivo during the first postnatal week. However, the role of local interneurons in regu- lating excitability of cortical circuits in vivo has not been directly examined.
