RPCs) alter their competence over time to generate different cell types. Cone photoreceptors, for example, are produced during early stages of development, whereas rod photoreceptors are produced during late stages. In this talk, I will discuss our recent work identifying a novel transcriptional cascade that operates to control cone photoreceptor production at the appropriate stage during mouse retinal development. Given that temporal patterning of neurogenesis is widely observed throughout the central nervous system (CNS), we expect that these findings might help uncover how different types of neurons are produced at specific times during neurogenesis in other regions of the CNS.
