La poterie contemporaine au Yémen?. un artisanat indigne d’intérêt??

Contrary to other forms of popular arts and crafts, contemporary Yemeni pottery is often overlooked by the public, whether Yemeni or foreign, and by academics. The production often appears as disappointing and mediocre, letting one feel that it is a minor and uninteresting craft industry. Yet, if one takes into account the different constraints that they have to deal with, Yemeni potters appear to master a specific technique. Building on three case-studies located in different Yemeni regions, this article presents an inventory of contemporary pottery. It focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of a craft industry confronted to a wide range of challenges amongst which the transmission of knowledge, the renewal of techniques and the competition created by imported products.
