Arsenicishighlytoxicinallofitsformsfoundinnaturalgroundwater.Animprovedmethodfortheestimationofinorganicarsenicatlowlevels(μgL?1)inwaterhasbeenproposed.Themethodinvolvesthegenerationofarsineinaspeciallydesignedcellbyborohydridereductionofarsenite(AsO21?).Theresultingarsineispassedthroughafilterpaperpre-dippedinmercuricbromidesolutiongivingayellowishbrowncomplex.Thecolorintensityofthespotsiscalculatedbyscanningthespottedpaperandanalyzingtheimageusingspeciallydesignedsoftware.Themethodwasfoundtobeeffectiveattracelevelshavingalinearresponseattheconcentrationrange2–20μgL?1(8–80ng).Thedetectionlimitoftheproposedmethodis1μgL?1(4ng)whichcanbereducedfurtherbymakingsomemodificationstotheapparatus.Themethodwassuccessfullyappliedtotheanalysisofsyntheticsamplesandfieldsamplesofwater...
