Bioconcentration of metals in the head capsule and skeleton of Clarias gariepinus exposed to sublethal concentrations of soap and detergent effluents

摘要

The sublethal toxicity of soap and detergent effluents from a soap and detergent industry wereinvestigated on Clarias gariepinus using a renewable static bioassay. The bioconcentration ofmetals in the head capsule and skeleton were significantly different (P<0.05). The result revealedthat the skeleton had the highest concentration of Iron at 38.0x10-3mgkg-1, and the leastconcentration of cadmium at 0.48x10-3mgkg-1, the result also revealed high iron concentration inthe head capsule at 36.4x10-3mgkg-1 and copper being the least accumulated metal at 1.00x10-3mgkg-1. It can be deduced that the fish species has the tendency to bioaccumulate heavy metalsfrom a polluted environment, which may lead to the impairment of natural population size; thusconsumption of fish from such polluted environment should be discouraged since theirconsumption could be deleterious to human health.
