Effect of Culture Medium on Some Characters of Polyanthus tubersa in Hydroponics Culture

In this study, the effects of culture medium on some properties of Polyanthus tubersa in hydroponics culture was studied. Bulbs were planted in pots (60*20*20 cm) with three different culture media including sand, perlite and sand-perlite (1/1). Four Bulbs were planted in 6 repetitions. Bulbs were irrigated with nutrient solution twice a day. Measured characters were the number of bulbs which flowered, the length of flowering stem and flower axis, number of flower, the diameter of flowering stem, the diameter of bulbs. in the end of examination, the number of produced bulbs and the percentage of live bulbs Results indicated planted bulbs in sand-perlite medium matured earlier.The percentage of flowering bulbs in perlite, sand – perlite and sand media were 70. 50 and 50, respectively. Perlite-sand treatment caused increasing in plant length in compared to sand and perlite treatments. The difference among treatments in number of flowers was not significant (p<.05). The stem diameter was thicker in sand and perlite treatments than that of perlite -sand treatment and there was no significant difference between perlite and sand treatments. However their difference with perlite-sand treatment was significant. Results indicated no difference between sand and perlite treatments then use of cheaper bed (washed sand) for planting of Polyanthus tuberosa is economic.
