New Insights Into Irrigation Management

Pacific Northwest potato and sugarbeet farmers who irrigate their cropswith sprinklers need to know a lot morethan when to turn on the faucet. Theregion’s powdery silt loam soils don’tcontain much stabilizing organic matter,and existing soil aggregates that facilitatewater infiltration can be broken up duringirrigation. Afterwards, the loose particlesof sand, silt, and clay that remain can dryto form a solid crust that greatly limitsinfiltration into the soil.
